Barrows Items

An excellent translation of the supply and demand effect in RuneScape is visible in the market of Barrows Weaponry and Armour. To achieve this armour which is reputably the best in the game, a player must kill 6 different barrows brother and has an equal chance of recieving a piece of any barrows brothers.

The supply of each is equal, and therefore, they should cost the same, but in the special attack of the guthan armour set causes it to be worth about 3 times the price of the verac armour set. In addition, prices of all barrows armour raised suddenly in July 2005 when Jagex tweaked the game to no longer allow any player to do barrows easily.

This decreased the chance of getting a barrows item, and the number of people that could get barrows items, ultimately lowering their commonnes and raising their prices.

Barrow's Weapons

All barrows weapons and armour last 15 hours of solid combat before they must be 'repaired' at a fee (for each piece) when the weapon has become totally degraded. If you choose to repair the weapon before it becomes fully degraded, the cost will be lessened depending on how damaged it was to start with. The armour/weapon sets are very expensive, but provide the highest stats for defense and attack, being even better than dragon armour. Although they have no normal special, each set possesses its own passive special which is activated randomly when the full set of armour is worn. Note that for this effect to have a chance of occuring, you must hit your opponent.

  • Ahrim's special (activated while wearing the complete set): Will lower your opponent's strength when a damaging spell hits them.
  • Dharok's special (activated while wearing the complete set): The lower your your hitpoints fall, the higher you hit. A use of Dharok's set, Super Strength Potion, the Ultimate Strength prayer, Dragon battle axe special attack, a Salve amulet, 99 Strength (Maximum), 1 hp left, will, while fighting a shade, produce the max hit in RuneScape, projected to be over 60 if attempted. Considering that most players of RuneScape have about 60 health points or less, this attack would be devastating.
  • Guthan's special (activated while wearing the complete set): Will steal some of your opponent's hitpoints and may add it to your own. The amount you hit is not the amount you gain. (Eg. If you hit an 11 on an enemy, you may gain 7 hitpoints.)
  • Torag's special (activated while wearing the complete set): Will drain your opponent's energy at 20% a drain. However, it will not add it to your own energy. This will, after a few hits, render your opponent incapable of running. This is useful in the wilderness (But risky, barrow sets cost around 5 million gp), and the duel arena against rangers.
  • Karil's special (activated while wearing the complete set): Will drain your opponent's agility. This is nearly useless, but Karil's set has some of the best stats in the game. The effect can sometimes be used to kill players training their agility at the agility course, trapping them between obstacles.
  • Verac's special (activated while wearing the complete set): Your attacks will have a chance to ignore your opponent's defence provided by their armor. This set has the lowest stats of any barrow armor to make up for this devestating effect, but it is still better than full dragon.

While full barrow costs 5 million gold pieces, a complete set of dragon armour and weapons (full dragon) costs astronomically high - over 30 million gold pieces.

The barrow armour takes 46 days of constant combat (24 hours a day, no space between monsters) to have the repair costs outwiegh the huge cost of dragon.

Combat

Combat is an important aspect of the game, and killing monsters is one of most direct ways of gaining wealth. Combat is also needed to complete many of the quests, and can be used to fight other players .

Combat is subdivided into three primary categories: melee, ranged, and magic.

Melee : To do melee attacks, use weapons such as swords, maces, etc. Players must train their attack, strength and defence. The attack stat determines the chance of making a hit, whilst strength determines the maximum damage a player can do. Defence will determine how often a player is damaged. Attack also lets players wield stronger types of weaponry as their attack level increases. Defence also lets players wear stronger types of armor or shields as their defence level gets stronger. Melee attacks are most effective against ranged players.

Ranged : Ranged combat most popularly consists of the use a bow and arrows, but can also include crossbow and bolts, as well as a variety of of miscellaneous member's-only items including throwing knives/axes, javelins, and an elven bow which fires a given number of 'charges', all to name but a few. Higher range stats results in an increased chance of striking the target, as well as a greater damage output, although the latter is also affected by the ammunition type (e.g. Steel arrows/knives/axes as opposed to bronze). Likely due to the rapidity at which ranged weapons can be launched, ranging is sometimes said to be the quickest combat skill to train (though this is ambiguous and can be argued against). In player vs. player situations, ranging tends to be most effective against mages.

Magic : Magical attacks are marked by the use of runestones (simply known as 'runes') as a form of ammunition. As with all other combat stats, players must train their magic stats to a higher degree in order to generate a higher damage output, as well as increase the likelihood of a successful strike. As levels are increased, a greater number of spells becomes available to the player. Apart from combat, magic can also be used to teleport to (normally) set locations at higher levels, or enchant amulets and magical rings which enhance other abilities. In the new RuneScape ( RuneScape 2 ), failed missile spells recieve equal experience points received to what would have been received if the missile spell had been succesful. Previously in RuneScape Classic , failed missile spells did not yield any magic experience points to the caster, though to compensate for this, successful spells would yield more magic experience points than in the current RuneScape 2 . Magical combat is most effective against people in metal armor (and therefore, best against melee warrior).

RuneScape has a 'combat triangle', which is intended to stop any one class becoming dominant. Magic will tend to beat melee, ranged will tend to beat magic, and melee will tend to beat ranged. However it is often argued that the triangle becomes unbalanced at times. Continuing updates attempt to address this problem with varying success. It is also a well known fact that the chance of a non-member with the best equipment available to themselves winning against a member with the best equipment available is zero.

All three combat types also rely on the player's defence and hitpoints stats. The defence stat determines how likely one is to block an incoming attack, whereas hitpoints determine how much damage that can be taken before dying. The prayer stat, while seeming subtle at first, can turn the tide in a fight. Prayers such as the protection spells can render a person invulnerable to enemy attack, and they provide numerous protections.

And of course in addition to that which equipment a player is holding, the potions they have drunk, how much food they have, and countless other factors all combine to determine who will win the battle.

A player's 'overall combat level' is derived from the 7 stats mentioned above: attack, strength, defence, hitpoints, magic, prayer, and ranged. The combat level is designed to indicate a players overall strength and is also used to decide which players can fight each other to stop for example, very high level players preying on very new players. The maximum combat in RuneScape Classic is 123 (123.75 including decimal levels), and the maximum in RuneScape 2 is 126 although this can only be achieved by players with a prayer level of at least 98, as increasing the prayer level periodically raises combat level.
